The meaning of Clinamen:

When atoms move straight down through the void by their own weight, the deflect a bit in space at quite an uncertain time and in uncertain places, just enough that you could say their motion has changed. But if they were not in the habit of swerving, they would fall straight down through the depths of the void, like drops od rain, and no collision would occur, nor would any blow be produced among the atoms. In that case, nature would never have produced anything.

I have been set a task to create a children’s cover for this quote. My understanding for this quote is that it represents an uncertain time in someone’s life, where they have to do something new or move to a different place. The quote states that it is how it falls, at what makes it fall with other bodies. The front cover shows you the different ethnicities falling together. But if they were in the habit of swerving, they would fall straight down through the depths of the void, like drops of rain. This is shown on the back cover, where individual hands are falling like drops of rain.

I have tried to create a little story to help me make sense of the book cover. On the back cover I have written a blurb:

My book cover Falling With You represents a girl who has moved to England from Africa and is uncertain about starting a new school. School can be a scary place when you are young and not familiar with the surroundings. Especially if you are a different ethnicity or race. My book cover shows the different cultures coming together and welcoming her in her new school.

The book cover represents a rhythm of hands that are all the same, apart from the colour.
